Re: Help :(

in DOSBox General
want to play EcoQuest 2. I downloaded DosBox, and I just tried to drag the INSTALL.EXE file into the DosBox program. The message says: "Can't find text entry for 'videoPrompt.' This can be caused by a missing INSTALL.TXT, or INSTALL.HLP file. Module: TEXTDICT.CPP(148). The most likely cause is that …

Re: How to code for various Sound Cards

I just had a dad who was an electrical engineer in the telecommunications industry, so he was able to get the D/A chip for me. The easiest way to make a Speechthing yourself was soldering a bunch of resistors to a printerconnector. See e.g. http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/dacs.html. JAL

Re: DOS=HIGH

in DOSBox General
Can anyone help me? You could start by chaning your nick. As you by no doubt know, "Todesengel" was the nickname for Joseph Mengele in Auswitsch, and also the nick recently used by the native American schoolboy who murdered half his class. I think it is beyond decent taste to call yourself that. …

Re: Palm OS?

in DOSBox General
DosBox for palm os... is there any little tiny hope? It's not the OS that's the most important here, but the speed of the processors on which PalmOS runs - it's too slow for most application. This topic has been discussed many times before, see e.g. http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=5646 . …

Re: DOSBox takes extra CPU time to draw the screen

in DOSBox General
Drawing the screen, especially a graphics screen, takes quite some time, since the internal buffers have to be converted to output suitable for your display configuration. I'm quite sure DOSemu does this as well. Is it because DOSBox updates the screen continously, while other emulators, including …

Re: PCjr Emulation Plays At Incorrect Pitch

Yes but the original was within your PC case...it was muffled. Allow that to come out full blast from a speaker and it may be too annoying. Maybe we could have an option to change the pitch on demand? There are a few games that I agree sound better pitched....but others which I'm glad to have toned …

Re: PCjr Emulation Plays At Incorrect Pitch

This also happens with PC speaker sounds. Thing is...do you really want the sound to be THAT high pitched? I'm all for accuracy but not if its going to pierce my ears in the process. It seems to me we all want the sound to be pitched as the original game intended. DOSbox is an emulator, not a …

Re: Just an idea about cycles

How about throttling cycles combined with idle detection? That way, when the game doesn't need too many cycles, the CPU usage would be lower. However, there may be compatibiliy issues this way. There is no 'idle time' to detect for DOS programs. Since DOS is a single tasking OS, programs just run …

Re: DOSBox takes extra CPU time to draw the screen

in DOSBox General
If dosbox will every have a "write to screen" option then I hope it will be optional otherwise I see many problems with it. I don't think Windows allows writing directly to screen, ever. DirectX is as close as you get... Also, Hercules or Tandy emulation wouldn't be possible with direct writing to …

Re: DOSBox takes extra CPU time to draw the screen

in DOSBox General
Why does DOSBox take extra CPU time to draw the screen? I don't think DOSEmu takes extra CPU time simply for just drawing the screen. Drawing the screen, especially a graphics screen, takes quite some time, since the internal buffers have to be converted to output suitable for your display …

Re: Just an idea about cycles

/\ hisssss  He's right though. If you think you can do better by all means do. He's not right. Darkfalz proposes a purely functional (as opposed to technical, not as opposed to broke) description how he thinks the cycles problem might be tackled. Why would someone with a good idea be obliged …

Re: COM Ports

in DOSBox General
I think Serial COM ports aren't supported in the current version of DOSBox (0.63) - The good news is that somebody submitted a working patch for this. So, you better cross your fingers and wait a little for 0.64 - Hopefully serial com port support will be included. Err... are there any other COM …

Re: 16-bit VESA support?

in DOSBox General
I'm a bit afraid that people will use 16 bit vesa support and then complain that dosbox is so slow while they should have used 8 bit vesa support. Qbix, where have you been, say, the past two years? People are always complaining DOSbox is too slow! :) Adding 16-bit support won't make it worse, I …

Re: DOSbox Adlib sound regression?

IIRC, some early games didn't detect Adlib on fast PCs. True, but that shouldn't effect (affect?) DOSbox too much, since DOSbox doesn't time its I/O to the CPU speed (or better: the cycle speed), so the timing problem with higher cycles is a result of a different technical problem, though resulting …

Re: DOSbox Adlib sound regression?

Zorbid: I do remember Sierra games having troubles with that. I remember that it was a standard practice to kill time by playing with I/O ports a certain number of times while waiting for the Adlib to respond, which resulted in a much shorter delay on faster computers. Well, since the ISA-bus used …

Re: why the [-whatever...] command doesn't work???

in DOSBox General
Hi everybody, I'm trying to use DosBox in fullscreen and play my games accordingly, so after reading the readme file I typed the -fullscreen command, but it doesn't work.... I know it must sound like I'm both dumb and dumber, but would you please help me? It's not a command, it's a …

Re: Dragonsphere memory issues

Alright, I tried searching for this problem and looked through what I found, but to no avail. I've been trying to install my old copy of Dragonsphere but it says I have no available space to install to. I've mounted c: drive with a gigabyte of space as well as my d: drive as the cdrom, but it still …

Hey, perhaps you should register, so you can edit your posts instead of needing to make another post to correct your self? As I've said before I only send out 3 or 4 V!A.GR4 spam a week, so it's worth your while ;) Ah, so it's you clutterling up my mailbox! I bet you sell these cheap r0lexes too, …

Re: Tandy 3 Voice?

in DOSBox General
However, irrespective of this, all of the points that have been previously made still stand. I completely agree (as you might have concluded from my previous comments). Tandy sound should be configurable independently from Tandy graphics, for two good reasons: 1) Computers used to exist having …

Re: A-Train graphics issues

I haven't played the game, but might it actually be using the 640x480 with *configurable* (from among 65535 colors I believe) 16 color palette VGA mode? EGA used a fixed palette, there's no way to change those colors as far as I know. EGA allows assigning each of the 16 attributes to any of 64 …
