Re: Winter is coming (price hikes for hardware)

in Milliways
I used to be able to find complete Pentium and earlier systems for under $60 shipped on eBay all day long just in 2016-2017. Now, forget it. Locally, it was even cheaper here, but as I picked up all 486 and Socket 7/370 era hardware on sale locally over the last two years, the sources have dried up …

Ugh. Why is he doing this? I don’t particularly dislike this guy, but the show seems to focus mainly on modern gaming/high end gaming with water cooled this and that every other episode. Why does he have to go and get into retro gaming? Hardly seems like his audience would give a crap.

Re: Sigh... the things I miss. Never knew about this.

Call me ignorant, but I never knew about this amazing demo that has technologies being demonstrated long before they were affordable and mainstream. I must live under the biggest rock on the planet. Either way, super amazing to watch. https://www.engadget.com/2018/12/10/mother-of-all-demos-50th- …

Re: May be on the cusp of a big life change - could use advice!

in Milliways
The only good advice I can give you is switch jobs every year or two, keep your skills up and don't stay in the same role too long. If you’re young, I’d get your degree and think about starting your own business. That has its own problems but at least you’re not stuck waiting for 3 departments to …

Re: Overkill workstations - what are your thoughts?

in Milliways
I do have one idea, although outside of being a rendering farm in a box, I'm not sure it would be good for anything else: quad 16 core Opterons. I checked Ebay and the cpus aren't too bad, although the motherboards are still a bit pricey around the $200 mark. You're limited to PCI 2.0 x16 so I doubt …

Re: Overkill workstations - what are your thoughts?

No opinions on the workstations besides being out of my price range, but ugh having to put up with some of their arrogant owners.... :| Ever had a death threat for admitting overclocking 22 years ago instead of buying a Pentium Pro? Wow...that's just fscking nuts. I never had a Ppro back in the day …

Re: Overkill workstations - what are your thoughts?

Well I could certainly never spend $10k on a cpu. I don't know anyone that could. $2500 to $3500 for a high-end Threadripper system isn't horrible given how much an SGI used to cost. I do CG and video editing but I'm not making the kind of money on my freelance projects to where I can justify that. …

Overkill workstations - what are your thoughts?

in Milliways
What are your thoughts on overkill or high-end workstations? For example: dual 28 core Xeons I consider to be complete overkill. Even more so now that there is a 32 core Threadripper chip, for a fraction of the price. I personally think that the 8 core Ryzen cpus are the new price/performance sweet …

ECC server RAM

This isn't really an old hardware question, but I wondered if any of you guys have ever heard of this brand: https://www.amazon.com/Timetec-Supermicro-1866MHz-PC3-14900-Registered/dp/B07BMM4WYN/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1542503521&sr=1-7-spons&keywords=64+gb+ECC+RGB+RAM&psc=1 This is …

So what the actual hell were these supposed to go in, originally? Does anyone know the providence of these? Were these leftovers from Ascii Red or some other giant system of that era? I mean, just one of those trays I think would have been worth $10k back in the day and I see 5 of them just sitting …

Re: Bad movies and horrible films

My vote is for “Deathbed: the Bed That Eats”. Completely, horrifically, terribly unwatchable. It’s amazingly bad. Easily the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen Troll 2 and Basket Case.

Re: Planning for the future - when to let it all go?

I imagine my stuff will probably end up in a dumpster or estate sale, if I suddenly drop dead. My brother doesn't have any interest in it, and my friend that does have an interest in it would probably only take a few things. I don't have as big a collection as some of you guys, but I'm already …
