Missed opportunties on E-bay

in Milliways
So I was browsing through Ebay looking for DOS software and found a copy of 3d Studio release 3 for DOS. I have been looking for a legit copy and I knew right then I should have bought it but I didn't, for whatever reason (having to dig out my paypal password being one of them). Hopped back on later …

85 colors on a Tandy 1000SX

in Milliways
Somehow this guy figured out a way to get 85 colors out of CGA on a stock Tandy 1000. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR1uq4y9G34 It sounds like he cheated a bit by doing the encoding on another machine, I'm not sure how this is possible. Maybe some of the more hardcore bit-twiddlers out there can …

Re: FOSS Games and old hardware

Not familiar with the hardware nomenclature...GFFX? R300? Only R300 I'm familiar with is a MIPS chip. I've run some of these but not on any hardware old enough to be retro. Unless you consider a P4 with GMA 950 graphics to be retro.

Re: Your favorite retro apps?

Yes, 3d Studio was a really neat application, especially when all you're used to is Povray. I was able to buy version 3 on a student license but couldn't afford the upgrade to 3ds Max. I've since switched to other software but sometimes get the urge to locate an old copy of 3ds and fire it up. I was …

Oh, that's what they were getting at. I thought perhaps it was a "only retro games here, we don't need no stinking applications" type thing. And yes, I don't see anything wrong with the abbreviation either. Pretty sure that's fairly standard.

Your favorite retro apps?

in Milliways
I guess to define retro here, I'm going to go with anything that is broken by Win XP/Win 7. If it runs on DOS/Win 3.11/95/98 it is fair game. Some of mine: Deluxe Paint II, Fractal Painter, Corel Draw.

Re: Post your 'current' PC

ThinkPads are great! Fistbump. Thinkpads FTW my friend. I'm pretty sure I'll get 10-15 years out of mine if I baby it. Will have to switch to DSL Linux or some other small distro and virtualize the most recent, least piggy version of Windows at that point though. Win 10 is probably the last OS that …

Re: Post your 'current' PC

How can you guys afford 16GB of RAM at current prices? Around here, the cost has about doubled compared to prices in January 2012. Well mine is used server RAM. I think I paid $120 for 24GB. The Xeon cpus were $135 each, motherboard I think about $100. It's only PCIe 2.0 and not 3, but I figure I …

Re: Post your 'current' PC

Don't have pics right now, but here are my specs: Dual 6 core Xeon 5650 cpus, 2.6ghz speed 24GB ECC RAM (only 16GB showing for some reason) Tyan server motherboard 2TB of disk DVD RW drive Radeon 7950 850W PSU (had a hard time finding something smaller that had the necessary cables for a dual proc …
