Re: Ever get the feeling you missed the boat?

in Milliways
Sometimes I wonder whether I should have worked harder / more. That would have progressed my career faster and I would have had far more $ in the bank. However: I also realize that life is not guaranteed and I enjoy spending time on hobbies, with family and friends. That is why I chose a slower …

While I like the look of the pizza boxes, they are a bitch to upgrade. I would say I probably prefer the mini towers, myself. Hard to find them anymore, though (well, the "classic" look, at any rate). 2 5.25" bays and 2 3.5" bays are plenty, although if you're making a system with multiple floppy / …

Favorite form factor for PC case?

So, which do you prefer, given a choice? 1. Pizzabox (Sparcstation, Indy, Next slab, generic small form factor desktop) 2. Cube (Mac Cube, Next Cube...haven't been many cubes, come to think of it) 3. Tower 4. Desktop (not pizzabox shape and not SFF) 5. Other

There are worse things than being a cog in a machine. It is said that a lot of the stories on http://www.clientsfromhell.net or http://www.notalwaysright.com are highly exaggerated, if not outright false, but if they reflect even a fraction of the reality of working in retail, I'll stay in my …

I wonder what it would be like to work in a recycling center (and specifically one that takes apart computers). Would be kinda neat to be able to identify precious pieces of hardware and resell them or something (btw this is just some weird fantasy of mine, I'm not even sure if such a job even …

Ah ok I see what you're saying. I was thinking I was going to have to brush up on my Ferengi to pull that one off, 🤣.

You're looking at this the wrong way! It's an opportunity  Learnt this from my last boss. Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Oh the pain, I needed this for a project, it will set me back weeks and cost me a fortune :dead: Get a partial refund and get the goods. That is what I always do. Sending …

Re: Laptop power supply voltages?

in Milliways
Good question. I think some can, others can't. I don't know about specific voltages, but the Thinkpad W520 needs a 170W adapter but will recharge with both a 135 and 90W adapter (although I think with the 90W you can only charge it, not use it at the same time). So it stands to reason there is …

Well it won't be a complete loss if I can't get a refund, I still have an AWE 32 I can put them in, although I think it will only "see" 28 MB of that. I'll have to keep the other 32 for something else or trade them.

Last time I used the FD installer was a rather horrible experience... I do hope they have changed it since the last version. If not, rolling your own DOS system is not such a bad idea after all ;) How big is your harddrive? Maybe you could set up a minimal boot floppy with network drivers, grab the …

DosFreak, I really like the look of that Fun500 (almost looks like Motif) and may give that a try, assuming I can get it to run on my machine.

Re: Best OS for a 286?

DOS 3.3 or 5.0 depending on the speed of the 286 and if it has SCSI, IDE or an original MFM drive. DOS 6 is best for 386 systems and above that can use upper memory. It's only a 8mhz 286, I'm going to try and use a scsi drive with it (I have a PC card drive and a pcmcia to compact flash adapter, …

FreeDOS works on 8088 and above. I see no reason why one shouldn't use it. I don't see any reason I can't use it either, but their site seems to only have a CD image, unless I download the individual DOS components separately and make a bootdisk, I don't know how I'm going to get it on that system. …

Keep your regular job. Start an eBay or other online business during evenings / weekends and build it up to ultimately replace your job. Do not confuse a hobby with making a living. Computers have a very limited (to no) future. Yeah, I know. That's why I've been looking for alternatives, I see the …

Ever get the feeling you missed the boat?

Lateley I've been noodling around with starting my own PC repair shop. I've talked about doing it on the side with a friend, but he can't really do any sort of financial commitment and he really can't do the time commitment now that he has a family. I can come up with enough money to get a start but …

Well, I wasn't going to go off on the guy, I was just a bit bummed that it wasn't what I ordered. I haven't had a chance to try it in my machine yet, it shouldn't damage it. If it isn't going to work it just won't work. If it does work, then I have to decide if it is worth the hassle to get it …
