Hard to say, I think it depends from game to game. Quake 3 would probably run better on the PIII, the game engine really likes to have a lot of cache on the CPU. UT *might* run better on Mendocino, but I'm not sure.

V3 2000 is very close to a "perfect card" for your system, I would not change it. It's also a bit too powerful, a Banshee would be probably a better fit for that CPU, but I see no real reason to downgrade. RageII is much worse than V3 2000, is even much worse than Voodoo1 4 MB (in 3D) - it's slower …

I am leaning more towards a modern(ish) sleeper build because I have a ton of period correct Windows 95/98 machines and I don't think a late 90's server build would be much use at all, other than to just be cool. I would keep both machine, but on the PIII 550 I would install a V2 and I would keep it for glide games (it should even run old dos glide games).

I have a Compaq system that have a PII 350 with am identical heatsink. It's designed so the fan from the back of the case will suck the hot air from the CPU and push it outside. I don't really like it, it looks quite cheap and it's not very good. But it shows again the versatility of slot1.

What version(patch) is UT? Earlier versions were heavily optimized for glide (3dfx cards) and D3D/OpenGL cards were very slow. Even the latest patch will run quite slow, unless you have a good cpu/video. Try running the game with a 3dfx card, if you have one. V3 3000 should be a good choice for that …
