Agree, I'd choose depending on if you wanted to go with PCI or PCI-E more then the card itself. I also upgraded from the onboard ADI1984A to a X-FI OEM SB0770 card, sound was much better in Win7

I agree with the above, Win9x on newer hardware often is more hassle than it's worth. For example Baldur's Gate 2 System requirements are: PII 233Mhz, 32MB Ram, 4MB Video card. Also agree adding an ISA card would be a downgrade. I get wanting to max out the memory but 512K will support 1024x768 in 16 bit colour, Thats pretty damn good for a 486

This is why businesses like to standardise hardware, even today where Windows is more forgiving. You may be about to do a semi standardised install. For example few of my machines all use the same intel chipset, nvidia graphics, Creative sound and and NIC drivers.

I used to use Quarterdeck Cleansweep back in the day which later became part of Norton Systemworks. These days my builds are pretty static so don't bother, It's not like newer versions of drivers and programs are been released any more. If something goes terribly wrong I simply reinstall windows

kickloch found a utility, I only tested with Screamer but would think it works for more games. The BIOS upgrade is optional and selecting "Standard VESA 1024 by 768 @ 60 Hz" seems to be a safe bet. Re: Black screen problems with Screamer 2 and Screamer Rally on Matrox Mystique

Basically you want to limit the times 2 devices are using the same IDE Channel. Most of my builds I'm booting off spinning rust but all my games are installed on a HDD on the Primary IDE of the 2nd IDE channel. Therefore it makes sense to put the CD drive as a slave on IDE 1

I like the network idea and has been on my todo list for a while now. Until then though (and probably after) I always create a partition with the Win98 folder from the CD and at the very least drivers to get network up and running but if you have the space rest of the drivers, apps as well

One thing to keep in mind wit BX motherboards is earlier revisions max out with a P3 600 Katmai. Personally I don't find this to be a problem as anything requiring a faster CPU is better on my XP rig anyway but still worth been aware of.
