The DX9-Techdemo from 2003 looked better than the final version. I own the orange-box, but I will check out if I can get a HL2 version running on a retro-pc with dx9 without installing steam.

hopefully you will not use the dvi of the 6200 because it's blurry blurry blurry in plain dos. Using the VGA the output is good but not centered (textmode/VGA-256/EGA-16). Beside that it's a fantastic card. It can run the matrox-reef-demo and nearly all ATI-Techdemos up to the 9800stuff.

I spent hours with this thing... it worked nice until now. No I never heard about that. ESSCFG reads the PNP-vaules and configures the card right, but now the PNP bios has deactivated the card and so no input for esscfg.

That's the PNP-Bios in combination with the LAN and the Soundcard... it's really hard to get it working stable. You have to use Intel ICU PNP manager and force the settings, otherwise the machine will behave like you have described.

The main system is used most of the time, but I need those others for things that do not work good on that system. Older Dosgames run better on 386/486 or even 286/xt, later stuff is better on P3/4 with Pixelshader-Gfx. The PII is a good compromise between the other worlds.
