Re: Leaked Windows 9 screenshot

There were bugs with window 7's start search, but I sometimes wonder if it was just to prevent someone from auto completing a poweruser command. I still like the pin to startmenu feature. It was the first thing I gotten used to when I first started using windows 7.

Re: Leaked Windows 9 screenshot

I've had three different systems running Windows 7, two using home premium and this one using fresh windows 7 ultimate. A plethora of drivers, the only time I have never heard this dynamic range compression going on when there's loud or alot of loud audio, is if I'm using ASIO, Kernel Streaming or …

Re: Leaked Windows 9 screenshot

The thing I was talking about is something hardcoded into the new Windows Audio, there's no way to turn it off unless Microsoft releases a hotfix for it. There's a big difference between audio in Windows XP (loud things cause heavy distortion, rectified by making sure your soundcards mixer is set to …

BASSMIDI no longer works anymore and I don't know why.

I recently uninstalled it because I thought CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth would conflict with it, but being unhappy with VirtualMIDISynth's behaviour I tried to reinstall BASSMIDISynth and... it refuses to work. I get complete silence, nothing. I am loading soundfonts, the same soundfonts I've always …

Re: Leaked Windows 9 screenshot

Audio obviously. If you play really loud files, instead of clipping you hear something akin to dynamic range compression. There is no way to turn this off and the only way to bypass it is ASIO or Hardware OpenAL via ALchemy or actual OpenAL by itself.

Re: Abandoning Skype

Have you tried hosts file redirecting the known skype ad servers to 127.0.0.1? Another good reason to not use Skype anymore: http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~salman/skype/index.html

Re: GOG.com now supports linux!

I can understand the DOS related stuff working under Linux, but what about the games that were natively ported to Linux? Those are hard as hell to get working properly. Unreal Tournament under Linux has a outdated OpenAL that expects oss and will not function properly under ALSA no matter what you …

Re: Safely restoring DirectMusic functionality to Win7?

in Windows
They're not critical files. The OS will function without them. If they cause problems you can recover them from the backup you will be making They're "critical" in the sense that you have to practically change them from another OS and somehow make sure that the filesystem remains consistent and …

Re: Leaked Windows 9 screenshot

How, exactly, can you tell the difference? Have you hit Winkey+Tab lately in Windows 7? When the desktop looks like Windows 98 and has all the bugs and issues like trailing windows graphics associated with it. I also don't use the winkey shortcuts, hell the only time I ever touch the winkey is if …

Safely restoring DirectMusic functionality to Win7?

in Windows
Though this is only to fix like, one game. Is there a safe, full-proof and fail-proof method to restoring the DirectMusic binaries to their non stubbed state so games like Unreal 2, et all work properly? I refuse to turn to google for this one because I'm paranoid about modifying system files. …

Re: Conflict freespace - 1998 game on DVD?

in Windows
You can use nGlide to force Freespace to your desktop resolution, it's also worth mentioning the D3D in Freespace 1 is gimped and is forced to a lower detail mode even despite your settings. Running it in glide mode is the only way to see the full detail that old engine has to offer. Though if you …
