Interesting. I had no idea that the plastic housing could be pried free of the socket pins like that. How difficult was it to pull the base off?

The speed is controlled by the drivers, but I didn't see any options to control the fan curve from the drivers, even with coolbits installed.

It's not fully inserted. At best, I could replace the surface mount polymer capacitors with a through-hole version with some extra length and tilt it out of the way. But I'm not keen on modifying this card and it's the first one out of several that I've bought so far that actually works.

My SC-55mkII has firmware revision 1.00 so the bodge wires and other quirks may be a result of bugs from the first release. Unfortunately, I have no other units for comparison. That CD drive on the last photo is pretty cool. The entire drive bay pops out to feed the disk instead of a motorized tray.

Doom is old enough that the polyphony isn't an issue. One surprise where it does matter is Warcraft II, which sounds best on the SC-55 but requires the polyphony of the SC-88. This is a good candidate for the X2GS.

I buy all of my capacitors from AliExpress. They're no Nichicons, but have worked fine for all of my repairs. That's quite bizarre to see one suddenly go bad like that. I've never seen anything like it.

I wonder if that gunk was some kind of fader grease. I'm not sure why else something like that would be in there. If the component produces a lot of compression, it might be designed for grease and wear quickly with it cleaned off.
