Slow - which game(s) did you test, and at what resolutions? Does the game use shaders? Maybe a Radeon 9000 makes sense? Should run much cooler than a 8500, especially the non-pro version (be careful to get one with 128 bit memory, not 64 bit!).

There are tools for TRIMming SSD under XP, don't know if those will work on older OSes - probably not. For Intel SSDs there is "Intel SSD Toolbox". The OCZ Vertex is supposed to TRIM itself (firmware feature so maybe you have to update the firmware).

Actually I'd try something like GF2MX or GF4MX. I know from experience that a GF2MX works fine on GA-5AX (Aladdin V). Those cards should run much cooler than most of the cards you mentioned. Well, WD90C31 was very fast for DOS and also good for Windows (don't have comparison benchmarks for Windows, though), but that's ISA. Soviet conscript seems to be interested in early PCI cards. I suppose Windows (3.11) performance should not be an issue.

Did you already check http://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/ ? It seems that Radeon DDR (= 7200) is slightly worse than Rage 128, I'd assume that this didn't change with Radeon 7500 which is mainly a die-shrink.

My guess is that it measures characters output by BIOS functions in text mode. It says characters and not bytes, and the values are too low for anything else. 5k would mean 13 seconds to fill a VGA screen.
