You don't need a SCSI card with a BIOS for CD-ROM use. That just introduces problems. I use an AHA-1502 or something in my 386. The most basic 16-bit ISA 50-Pin SCSI card Adaptec made. Only things I know of which would benefit for more than 4MB of RAM is Win 3.x and Links 386 Pro (recommended 8mb ram in the official specs), and Speedsys which you've already mentioned.

I'd like to add that if protected-mode support could be added for sbmidi as well, that would greatly increase the usability on the MIDI functionality on the early SB cards. I don't have enough slots in my 386 to expand with a MIDI card (and I'd want to keep using my SB Pro 2).
