Re: Another 486, just for fun.

I hated those PC tech bastards back then. They were always really smug and pretended they had all the answers and I was just some punk kid annoying them with questions about upgrading my crappy old and no longer supported 2.5 year old 486. I have had similar experiences and was eventually told to …

Re: Another 486 build.... with EISA!

Well, I pin-pointed that weird SC2000 problem. It must be some random bug or hardware incompatibility since it only happens when the program is started in real mode. With EMM386 installed and the machine in V86 mode, SC2000 works fine. I still don't understand why it happens in Creative's diagnose. …

Re: Another 486 build.... with EISA!

Revisited the machine last night, which was ironically the 21st birthday of the BIOS core. Its now old enough to drink. I managed to get UMBs working with the latest version of "The Last Byte". Re: Normal for newer PSU's to make high pitching sounds if connections are not correct?

Can't be worse than the alternative. The day I started working at the computer store, the first job was a motherboard replacement. I was sternly told to not plug in the machine when done. I later found out another new tech who replaced the board the day before (that I removed) inserted one of the AT …

Re: Celeron 300

Sorry to bash PC Chips, but it's a fact that out of all the mobos I've had to replace in the last few years it's been 75% of that make along with ECS. Maybe I'm just lucky that this old one still manages to fire up....touch wood. No surprise given that ECS merged with PC Chips. Both were bottom of …
