Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

Okay because I'm lazy and don't want to upload TOO many descent theme variations on my channel :p descent theme IN-GAME via dual opl3 descent theme IN-GAME via cqm The CQM version gained some annoying line noise after DOS started in full screen. Beats me. I was able to record the first game track in …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to do this but i was hoping you could record the samples directly from the Game, using the Grand Opl3 comparison specs, so the recordings could be used for this project. The music does not sound exactly like in the game when played with media players. Same …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

Ooh, Descent Shareware, that's a blast from the past. The registered version sounds different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXu-2oLRx-M As I don't own the game, I played it through windows media player. The sample you linked to me uses custom FM instruments (which I explained above). To recap... …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

Now for the big huge gigantic comparison of many, many many OPL3 variations, all on the descent theme as requested by MaxWar. This took awhile to do because I was recording from three separate computers. I hope everyone can hear at least some of the differences between all of them after listening to …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

That CQM card sounds pretty darn good with a high-quality output section doesn't it?! I recorded from LINE-OUT of the card. Later I tried throwing its LINE-OUT into the crystal's LINE-IN (and then using the crystal's LINE-OUT to get both devices), but unfortunately it seems like this PnP card won't …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

Okay so I finally did runs of that 4180. And wow, that has to be the best sounding CQM -- EVER. It *is* CQM, but its response is so well articulated with the nichicon caps and philips amp. (I'm guessing MaxWar has the non-philips amp varation of the card, as those recordings were not pleasant in the …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

In any case we can put this question to rest once and for all. Was there a big debate about this somewhere? There's basically a zero-percent chance that the CT2505 contains Yamaha's OPL3 core, for a number of reasons, including the mentioned trademark issue. There's also the fact that the chips …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

You, sir, are WRONG . If a SoundBlaster does not have a YMF262, CT1747, YMF289 or any other chip with an OPL logo on the chip itself, it DOES NOT have OPL3. Those have CQM, which is quite inaccurate to true OPL3. I do know what "CQM" is, and I've observed it extensively on the later AWE32 I have. …

Re: The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

This comparison is quite interesting however, there are a few errors: #1 It seems like a lot of people actually can't tell genuine OPL3 when they hear it. A lot of Vibra-16s have OPL3, even if there is not a YMF262 present (the FM is actually integrated like CT1747: which in some cases, sounds more …
