Re: Which ms-dos games need more than 1 MB video ram?

in DOS
I edited it , the initial post was "&" and not "&" so I was attributing unknown signification to an error (an html one) because I did not knew the word ampersand, which we do not use in my country. The word has a quite interesting history described in wikipedia. Man, the things you make me write, …

Re: Which ms-dos games need more than 1 MB video ram?

in DOS
Some of this games realy gave a hard time to my 386SX 25MHz, so I see the need for a faster 486. That is why I got one today  There are probably only a handfull of games prior to 1988 that I will play, and yes I don't see any game here later than 1995 but I'm certain that will be plenty of …

After some google research here are some of the games I remember playing in the 90's, they all came in floppies exchanged amongst friend so we had no way of choosing which games travelled to us, each new game was a party! 1000 Miglia 3D World Boxing 4x4 Off-Road Racing Aaargh! Aces of the Pacific …

Re: Future Retro PC Project

Thank you, and yes this may not be the definitive XP rig, but having to put a PC together quickly I thought I could give it a try. If nothing else I learn something for future projects. The games are the "classic" ones like GTA , Unreal, Max Payne and Mafia, Half-Life, Star Wars, Splinter Cell, Call …

Re: Future Retro PC Project

So I'm all set with a G860 and 2 sticks of 2GB DDR3, all for €86 with standard 2 year warranty, and the 9800GT it's on the way, for the HDD I'll have to use a spare 80GB Samsung SATA until I can afford an upgrade, and the IDE LG DVD-RW of the dead PC. And keeping the case. I'll just have to decide …

Re: Future Retro PC Project

Thank you archsan :) Those were my thoughts initially, but thanks to some opinions I became interested in the 8800GT history and it is decided, I find it to be a good balance overall. But you are absolutly right , it is a XP rig, so for that kind of stuff I have older systems, like the one I'm …

Re: Which ms-dos games need more than 1 MB video ram?

in DOS
When I say "designed for 386" I don't mean anything very technic, I just mean designed with 386 in mind. Are there many games from 1988 untill 1992 that run too fast on a 486? EDIT: Say a DX2 50MHz (and not the DX4 100MHz you mentioned earlier)

Re: Future Retro PC Project

Same here 😉 2GB of RAM go like this: ddr €50 ddr2 €30 ddr3 €10 that link, now I can stay a gamer and have global awareness 🤣 Got a sweet deal on a brand new , unopened 9800GT for €65 and so it is on its way 😀 , the first piece of the puzzle...

Re: Which ms-dos games need more than 1 MB video ram?

in DOS
So, by the power of your answers combined I must reach the conclusion that the amount of video ram is important mainly in what concerns to the max resolution...? and that there are too many games that need either a 386 or a 486 to play a good play? The reason for this questions is I'm still waiting …

Re: Future Retro PC Project

Nice tip on the ram, even if I choose not to install it, it would not harm to have a spare 2GB stick. I see... OpenGL...hmm, don't know much about this on such "newer cards", my son was born a little after the pentium4 debut and the pentium4-athlonXP wars, so everything after that is technologicaly …

Future Retro PC Project

Home's fastest PC, a 2008 low-end Sempron, just fried and I'm taking the chance to build a future retro PC for the "Windows XP Gaming Era", that meanwhile will serve as main family PC  Sketched Config goes like this: - 3GHz dual core (G860) for about €65 - 2GB of Ram (Kingston DDR3 1333MHz) …
