The Promise controller probably has an onboard BIOS that overrides the motherboard. Mine has all the connectors you list out, it's the EIDE 2300 Plus. It's not the only choice of course, there's a million controllers out there that do the same thing. I just got a brand new sealed Promise EIDE Pro …

You have the DMA set to 1 with that line and you said AU30DOS.com is set up at 3, so make sure those actually line up. Also, I saw it mentioned that if "Sound Blaster Pro Emulation" is disabled in Win9x device manager it'll prevent AU30DOS.com from loading in real DOS. It could just be that the …

8MB was a more likely pairing, but 16MB is perfect. I wouldn't consider more than that in any DOS/Win 3.1 machine or even Win95 until about a P100, because the benefits are marginal and there are DOS games that actually present issues with more memory.

I've had exactly that happen with my board when I had the modules inserted in the wrong slots, but I'm sure it can also be damage or other configuration issues.

You only need as much memory as a program is designed to use. Any less and disk swapping makes things slower than optimal, but any more than that does absolutely nothing. CPU cycles are a wholly separate resource.

Honestly I don't get the hype for the Gravis gamepads. I had both styles in the 90's, the original and the PS1-like, and really hated the d-pad compared to Sega, Nintendo and Sony console controllers of the time. Maybe it was the best of a bad situation, but I'm still looking for a better option. …

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all that's needed for Roland support in virtually all games is a new model MT32 (including the CM32 sound effects - equivalent to an LAPC-I) or an SC55 (equivalent to an SCC1)? Anything later will produce technically better sound, but probably isn't what the game was …

Yeah, I wouldn't even consider using a Voodoo with the pass-through cable. A monitor with two inputs (perhaps one with VGA and DVI if you have the right main video card, not that rare) or alternatively some kind of a switch very much necessary there.

Antec always made a pretty good basic PSU, bar some manufacturing faults in one or two product lines at one time.
