May I ask why you're going through all this? Maybe it's needed for your particular application, just wanted to say than in most (admittedly not all) cases connecting a normal/unmodified 1.44 drive to an XT just works.

I'm assuming you're using the editor of dos 6.22 and below. Just use the one from dos 7/win98, it has the (now) standard shortcuts and more like the F3/replace...

My question though is, why does my DOS have such a huge memory footprint (38K) while some people's DOS footprints are in the 9K-18K range? What is bloating the amount loaded into Conventional Memory? Files, buffers, lastdrive, stacks, all those and similar add to the "MSDOS" entry. REM them out …

This may sound weird but I've seen it working for a similar case: Connect an ATX machine to the same KVM, turn it on, switch to the 5160, turn the 5160 on. Not saying that it'll work, just a quick thing to try.

Actually even just "cycles xxx" works (in the standard builds). It's not laziness - many people are not aware that you can change many DOSBox settings dynamically from the commandline. So you're running a .bat file inside dosbox to lauch the games? If I understood this part correctly, what's the problem with adjusting the cycles for each game? Just bored to do it every time? In case all the above is correct, add to your .bat config -set "cycles=xxxx" to set the cycles dynamically …

For me even the best ball mice can't compete with a not-the-cheapest optical mouse. Apart from that there are cases for which there's no alternative, like a bus mouse/InPort interface.

Absolutely. Worst thing that may happen, although highly unlikely, is the new PC locking up when going through config+autoexec entries related to specific h/w (like a sound card). So you might want to REM those out beforehand. But again, highly unlikely.
