I'be acquired some older IDE drives of this sort. I always do a low-level format on them, which always seems to resurrect clusters it thought were bad. But no SMART abilities is annoying.

I would suggest that you completely disable any ACPI to give the system a little performance boost. Absolutely do not use hibernation or system restore, and possibly try disabling Windows File Protection... if all those things are present in 2000. I used to get a performance increase on XP by …

Does your BIOS allow you to assign IRQ's to PCI slots, manually? If so then just assign whatever IRQ you want to the slot the Audigy is sitting in, and see if it cooperates.

I was thinking about my S2720-533, which has PCI-X 133MHz ability IIRC. Though cards themselves may not throw data any faster, and the motherboard may adjust to run only at 32-bit/33MHz, might the board actually accomplish what it needs to, more quickly due to its ability to handle much quicker …

They just run hot. Although, if that was my card, I would clean up the corrosion/oxidation that seems to have built up around your regulators. There's nothing wrong with adding heatsinks or replacing the regulators, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Actually, not fair to say I "bought" since I was helping clean out my Paps' garage, and he found this in a corner; it was given to him and he never used it so said I could take it. I've been wanting a laptop for a long time so I'm curious to see if I can make any practical use of this.

I'd guess they used the wrong solder or something of that nature, and it just went south. I would have thought they'd covered that area with an epoxy or similar adhesive to avoid a problem like that, but then they'd have to buy epoxy and pay someone to apply it. 😜

HD Tune Pro is what I use. Not sure about the LBA part, but I tested a very basic 2GB drive from '97 on it. It's painful testing drives that transfer at a Max of about 2MB a second.
