Re: Personal dilemma - going on holiday

in Milliways
We were burgled earlier this year and all they took was a ring. My retro PCs and MIDI setup was untouched thankfully! Pretty sure most burglars just want cash, jewellry and car keys. TVs and consumer electronics are worth peanuts these days.

Re: Bought these games today

Never seen a retro PC shop here  consoles perhaps. British people don't like throwing working things away (at least that's what I like to believe) so there's some interesting computer things that pop up on eBay and at car boot sales from time to time. Amibay.com has a fairly active British …

Re: Athlon Thunderbird Win98 Build

Played some Blood and System Shock 2 on this last night. The Vortex DOS emulation works surprisingly well, although I had to move it manually to IRQ 7 to avoid a crash caused by conflicts with the onboard USB at IRQ 5. Also had to upgrade the Detonators back to a 45.x series driver as I was getting …

Re: Compaq Presario 2232 Cyrix MediaGX

To save time I'd boot from a DOS 7.10 floppy and run fdisk from there. Delete any existing partitions, create a small partition, set active, format /u /s, fdisk /MBR. Then if that works you can install Win9x on the existing partition, perhaps try expanding it later once 98 is booting.

Re: Athlon Thunderbird Win98 Build

Installed the 2041 Aureal drivers which fixed the crashes in 3DMark. Also downgraded to the 4072 Detonators which added a few hundred to the score. Shaping up to be a nice little system now. I have a stick of DDR on the way and a larger HDD (current one is only 13GB), then it'll be put into a nice …

Re: Athlon Thunderbird Win98 Build

This board has both DDR and SDR sockets. Made some good progress on the build, glad I build it outside the box to start with because it's been a challenge to get it stable. The Vortex 2 seems to be causing crashes in 3DMark. I'm running the official Diamond drivers, will try some reference Aureal …

Best of luck with your move, what part of the UK are you going to? I think you'll find some interesting retro stuff on UK eBay too …

Re: SoftMPU project needs your help! (game & sound card testing)

Thanks for your feedback. I also notice that Princess Maker 2 doesn't work with a YMF718 card. Not sure why, it works OK with my AWE64 Gold. It's true that the music tempo can be slightly off. I couldn't get it perfect without increasing the timing frequency, which would in turn cause CPU slowdown. …

Athlon Thunderbird Win98 Build

Just getting round to this build now. Athlon TBird 1200/133 http://i.imgur.com/A2v3Xl1l.jpg ECS K7VMM, yes it's everyone's favourite motherboard manufacturer! At least the caps on this one look good, which is saying something for a Socket A board. http://i.imgur.com/sWccN55l.jpg Maxtor 300GB PATA …

Re: What game are you playing now?

Finished The Ultimate Doom maps on Brutal Doom and now playing through Brutal Doom II. It's really well done and perhaps even the way Doom was always meant to be, had technology allowed. I do however agree with John Romero's comment that if they had released Brutal Doom originally, it would have …
