you could try disableing last access filestamp FSUTIL behavior set disablelastaccess 1 and indexing service set a fixed swapfile size disable the superfetch (vista) use readyboost (vista) defrag ps: what o/s ?

win 9x has write behind disk cache (enabled by default) maybe his is turned off theres an article about it here http://www.accucadd.com/TechNotes/Cache/WriteBehindCache.htm
