In the good old times we used to say Meg for Megabyte. The logical next step is Gig for Gigabyte 😉 Anyone remember this one? Mary had a little RAM -- only about a MEG or so.

The 386 I'm currently using doesn't have a hard drive auto-detect option while the seemingly defective board does. Both use AMI bios so it got me thinking. No I don't think so, it's an ASUS VX97. The fastest Intel chip it supports is a 233Mhz MMX, which I have and would be a decent speed increase, but I'm loyal to the 166 for some hard-to-justify reasons (like '166' looks cool on the LED Mhz display :dead: ) Ah I'm considering the same board for my …

Here's an idea... remove GUS and see if SB16 gives you both, music and sound effects. If it doesn't, it's probably faulty.

I ended up using a different motherboard - an MG 38606 w/ AMD 386DX-40 and 128k cache. When I look at it, it's actually an upgrade! The only downside is that the BIOS on this board doesn't have Auto detect capabilities. The DVD-ROM is a Pioneer 106S and it works fine with the sound card's IDE …

The sound card is an OPTI930 and I believe it uses a standard IDE interface. I installed the drivers that came with the card and they included the standard OAKCDROM.SYS and a bunch of other drivers from SONY, MATSUSHITA and the rest. I successfully installed MS-DOS 6.22 on a 128MB compact flash card and added a CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is connected to the sound card's IDE interface and it's horribly slow. Is this normal? Can't run memtest 4.0 from this computer... it gives me a dump of the registers, if I try booting from the floppy.. AX... BX... Cx... DX... I used to passively cool a Pentium III 800MHz with a Zalman CNPS-6000 all copper heatsink. At idle it stayed at 52-53C which was perfectly fine for me.

Keep both and get a 386 or 486 to round it off. My dilemma is even worse. I have literally about 15 different systems to choose from. Of course I don't have the space to keep them all nor the time to actually use them...

Depends on whether you have the space for two computers or not and how fond are you of dual booting? I never could get used to dual booting myself so I prefer having single OS machines.
