Re: Windows 95 setup guide for the 2020's

Hi 👋 This guide is awesome 👌 Constructive suggestion -Add a automated answer file to help speed up the install process I believe the serial key can be put into the answer file. https://msfn.org/board/topic/26389-how-to-95-and-98-setup-answer-file/ Thank you for the suggestion - I'll give it a go …

Re: Apple M1 computer SSD

in Milliways
No. It is like value of the computer went down sudden if I hear anything that is considered important that potentially fail and SSD *is* finite endurance. Endurance means finite use and finally fails, much like hard drive does. Therefore *MUST* be replaceable helps with value of the console or …

Re: Apple Shady computer hacks.

in Milliways
If I had to hazard a guess, could this be an availability issue? I know production is starting to ramp up again after the unspecified virus of unknown origin, but if this particular part became scarce, that could explain why Apple has moved to only including it in higher-priced tier systems. If it …

Re: Getting Unreal and Unreal Tournament to work on Win98

in Windows
I'm in the same boat, for UT in my case. I know this is an old thread, but Unreal Tournament is a pretty popular game and this thread is probably going to be revisited by many over the years. What is the best way to get Unreal Tournament running on Windows 98, with Glide/3dfx acceleration? This …

Re: Radeon 9800 Pro or Mx440 for Win 98 SE gaming

You know, I had this exact conundrum a while back when I was trying to pick between a slower PCI-graphics card and a Radeon 9200 for a system with a slot 1-motherboard. It's important to note that some slot 1-boards with VIA chipsets do actually support higher front-side-bus speeds with the proper …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

@leonardo : your suggestion bore fruit. The 2 non-working WIN95 machines used comctl32 ver 4.70 and 4.72 respectively, while the working machine used 5.81 Both non-working machines had IE 3.0 as their browser. On one machine I upgraded to 5.5 SP2, which fixed the 7zip issue and the usability of K- …

Re: DirectX install on Win95 OSR 2.5

I normally install the latest that the OS can handle. So, 8.0 for Win95. If you've never installed DirectX on the machine before, you might need to install dcom95 first as a prerequisite. DCOM is required by DirectX 8.0, but not by 7.0. Mostly DOS based games, and very few Windows 95 specific ones, …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

Well... to get back on topic... After seeing this story of leakages, I started up the system monitor to see what this one did. I could see the swapfile grow, but after waiting about 1-2 minutes it would be released. Same with memory usage. So, if there's supposed to be a leakage issue, I couldn't …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

... Translated that means "go pack your things and leave"? Just kidding. 🙂 Ok, ok, I understand. I'm quiet now and won't talk about this anymore. I was talking in defense, anyway, explaining my reasoning. "Derailed".. Um-yes.. 🙄 That makes it sound as if we had started talking about something …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

The OP was mostly concerned about the memory usage and leaks in Windows 95. 64-128 megabytes is plenty enough memory, and with proper adjustments to the cache and other memory management related settings the OS runs really well. Cacheman is really just a GUI front-end to adjusting parameters and …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

Just so you know, installing Internet Explorer and the shell update cause a whole host of these memory leak issues on Windows 95. At least I seem to recall Nathan Lineback had documented some issues down to various DLLs that were broken in those updates. You can see his website for more info ( …

Re: General doubt on PC games that use CD audio

the issue isn't that audio pauses upon track changes, where obviously there will always be a seek time with optical media, it's that PC games grind to a halt for a second or two. a CD drive playing audio should not affect the game at all. this really seems like a legacy PC cruft issue that reminds …

Re: Half-Life - CD music stuttering

The setting I've mentioned above is actually for the CD drive cache, based on its speed. I've seen on another Vogons thread that there's the utility Nero DriveSpeed which can be used to throttle the CD drive speed. I was not able to find a valid link for the installer: does anyone know where it can …

Re: Half-Life - CD music stuttering

no, on the contrary i would rather try a slowdown utility that will run the drive at a constant speed. 40x is no good for playing games off CD because of the constant spinning up/down adding delay, those fast speeds are really only good for things like installs. 8x and slower is optimal for games …
