The DS1292 is basically a programmable DIP switch so the jumper next to it is probably used to clear its settings/reset to defaults, then you'd need software to change them... no idea what the other jumper would be.

It's generally better to use direct serial connection (with DOSBox set to nullmodem) instead of modem if a game supports it.

When you upgraded to Catalina you lost the ability to run 32-bit apps, and the 64-bit version of DOSBox 0.74-3 is significantly slower than the 32-bit version.

Most DOS games used 8-bit audio, they always sound a bit "fuzzy".

If you format it in windows you won't be able to boot from it, since windows doesn't put a partition table/MBR on removable disks.

Instead of a .zip file you could just use a FAT disk image, stored as a compressed file on a NTFS (or similar) volume.

You'll likely find that it's because the core is faster than it used to be, leading to frames being rendered more often and bumping into the screen refresh rate (which is lower than the render rate) as NY00123 described, which in turn leads to frames getting delayed until the next screen refresh/ …

FAT12 can contain 1 to 4084 clusters. FAT16 can contain 4085 to 65,524 clusters. FAT32 can contain 65,525 to 268,425,446 clusters. The mac version of Descent 1 had CD audio instead of midi. Whether or not that was a good thing depends on who you ask and what midi hardware they had.

Using 1024 is not recommended due to bugs in MSDOS, use 1023 instead.
