Pretty much, I guess . Plugging and unplugging headphones from the back port would not be that convenient anyway . Unless its really cheap skip 500 and go for 1000/2000. 500 has no display and switching settings around via sysex is a pain. Especially if you want to use MU Basic (mu80) sound mode too. Agreed . According to the specs you provided, one of the outputs has a headphone amplifier, likely the front panel one . If you want to be sure, you will need to follow traces from the amp chip or ask the manufacturer . This is all new to me, I expected front and back ports to give exactly same signal. So, …

Sorry to read that . I don't know how common the symptom is, but somebody else has a similar issue here . Voodoo 5 5500 AGP only work in single chip mode! EDIT : If both your cards came from the same source, there may be something fishy going on.
