Same here - haven't experienced that kind of feature/function with my Recon3D or X-Fi. I know they both have a "Smart Volume" function in their drivers that's similar to a DR compressor, but it's an optional feature on both cards.

I agree that it's probably a dead fan. That said, my FX 5200 years ago was passive (the heatsink looked pretty similar to a Voodoo3); the 5500 is essentially the same thing. How hot? Those chips are probably rated for 80c or more so just not being able to touch it doesn't mean its too hot +1.
