Very interesting solution. I was about to suggest Puppy Linux for you - I booted that up on my P3 1GHz CuMine and had no issues browsing the web (at least the parts of the web I use; I don't do a lot of heavy multi-media stuff - Vogons, for example, loaded with no problems).

Very nice find. Always cool to see old machines given a new life. On the graphics card, you might look at getting a GF6200 - supposedly those are still being made (eVGA shows an AGP 512MB model, for example).

If you can do software scaling, why not scale it on the PC to 1080p and then dump that into the VGA to HDMI converter? Also, I'm guessing 100Hz will be a problem for many LCDs, hence the scaler which could perform the field rate conversion.

Very odd - is it an OC'd model (to be at 420)? On the 5800U it idles at 300MHz and the fan is off (it can game like that too); it'll cycle the fan on and off if it's running at 400, and keeps the fan on constantly at 500 (I've yet to find a game that can keep it at 500; benchmarks can do it though …
