Re: LAN or TCP/IP with Win 3.11 (NOT WFW)

Some things to try: Can you ping using a human readable name, such as vogons.org? If so, then DNS is working. If not, try using a direct IP address and deal with DNS later. Are you going to a site that still supports HTTP? Anything that redirects to HTTPS is going to fail with a browser that old. …

Re: LAN or TCP/IP with Win 3.11 (NOT WFW)

Update: I got TCP/IP working. Actually the DHCP program in mTCP helped me identify what my correct local IP was. Then my internet browsers just started to work, so that's done now. I believe the easiest way for somebody else to succeed would be: 1) Download the packet driver for your card (may be …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

Ended up buying the Samsung G3 24" 144Hz monitor that has VGA, supports 4:3 and IBM / DOS text mode of 720x400. It wasn't all good news though because even though the monitor lets you force 4:3, that's only if it detects a 4:3 aspect ratio... and 720x400 isn't :( so it stretches to full screen. Arg! …

Emulating old Web Server

I've been wanting to play around with creating old websites that would work on the original Netscape browser and IE. Beta or very early 1.0 versions etc, and so I want to create a web server that would have been existed back around 1994-1995. What would I be looking at? Windows NT? Unix? Old Linux? …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

The Radeon 9250 PCI could be a good choice. I've been looking at a Radeon 7000 PCI 32MB, reason being it would be for a Pentium 100 or MMX system so I really don't need anything too advanced. I just want the DVI while keeping compatibility with the PCI slot and not drawing too much power. If I …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

You can still find a large number of older, 4:3 19-inch monitors with VGA and DVI, for $100 or less. 19" LCDs are not 4:3 but 5:4 and most of them do not support 4:3 natively, some may support 4:3 resolutions be displayed correctly but might not display non-square pixel resolutions correctly and a …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

Without the OSSC, you're going to see resampling artifacts as described here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=775155#p775155 , the reason being that modern monitors assume 720x400 output resolution even though in reality 640x400 is used. Not a dealbreaker of course, but still a bit annoying. …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

Curious, how would anyone even be able to check? I guess you can check it in store, if it's possible. if it's a 60hz panel than it's most likely doing it through frame skip. Not necessarily, because new panels usually have better electronics and some will output at least 75 Hz. But there's no …

Re: 4:3 and refresh rate on a modern 24" LCD

That's also 60 Hz panel, so you need to check on practice if it can support 70/75 Hz. They may be listed, but supported only through frameskip. #LCDDOSgamingishard Ok, so when reading the specs of monitors, even if it lists 70-75hz, if it's a 60hz panel than it's most likely doing it through frame …
