Try Unisound. It supports most of PnP cards, and some nonPnP Creative cards (ie. my CT2800 Vibra 16s which is also CT2504 based)

Most popular were probably Trident series (TVGA8900 and TVGA9000). If you want powerfull Trident - look for 8900D (8900B and C, 9000B,C,D and "i" are slow). TVGA8900CL is probably OK.

In Windows 98 I'm using 40.72 drivers for Geforce4 MX440. Super stable, and never found any incompatibilities.

Windows 98 will recognize new drive (even if it is not detected by BIOS, you can overcome BIOS limitation :) but not file system on it. Hard drive needs to be partitioned for Windows 98 first, because Windows XP uses NTFS file system which can not be used by Windows 98 by default. You can do it …

The low-clocked Vanta-LT (AGP x2 version) was one of the few AGP cards that ran stably in the GA-586SG (SIS5591 chipset). More powerful cards caused the system to hang. So it may be useful in early boards with buggy AGP implementation (i.e. PC CHIPS BX Cell).
