holy crap, i just ran a virus check on the CF card and found the same virus major.1644!!! I just cleaned the cf card, popped it back in the pentium machine and viola! it worked! i have 600k conventional memory now.. thanks so much guys!

tried taking out the /l and the device high on himem.sys and emm386. Same thing. Sigh.. I never remember this being such an issue. I also reset the bios to default settings, no dice.
