Re: Rarest CPUs?

What's the deal at all to care about or even own "rare" CPUs? Unless a CPU was a milestone in some way or you put it into use, I don't see any reason to own it. Some people like to collect rare CPU's just for the sake of it (and some of these are quite valuable as well). Although not necessarily in …

Re: Strange CPU Socket

Oh so that´s what it is, an 386 486 combo board. What degree of performance can one expect of such an board? It's dependent on various factors, including the chipset on the motherboard. In the end, it's just a 386/486 combo board. So a 386 CPU should perform more or less the same as in a 386 only …

Re: Has anyone else ever found or heard of a "PGA169" Intel Pentium Overdrive for 486's?

This should explain the reason for the extra row of pins on 486 sockets: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_OverDrive (refer the section "486 sockets"). As I recall, the 169 pin socket was used as an "upgrade" socket on some 486 motherboards (for the 487SX or 486 "Overdrive" or ODP processors). …

Re: Good SB card to use with my 486SX rig?

Practically all Creative cards have a model number printed on the PCB, starting with CT (for earlier models). The Aztech cards can usually be identified by their FCC ID number, starting with I38-XXXXXXX. If you can provide those model numbers, then we can perhaps make a better recommendation.

Re: Strange CPU Socket

There is. The markings are the socket it self. Look for the triangle/arrow. ;-) I'm quite aware of that. Perhaps I wasn't quite clear on what I was trying to convey. Since the larger socket doubles for both the 486 CPU and the 387 FPU, one needs to ensure that the orientation of the latter is …

Re: Strange CPU Socket

Corret, larger socket has internal pins/row for the 387 FPU, nothing to do with a 486, the outer pins are a traditional 486 socket. Agreed - only thing that I'm not sure of is that there is no clear markings on the 168 pin socket on what the orientation of the 387 FPU should be (it isn't always the …

Always thought that this was just in the development stages when AMD acquired NexGen but, …

Re: Rarest CPUs?

How about Nx686 ? That is actually a really common CPU. It is also called the AMD K6. Nexgen was in the design process when AMD bought them. I think that elianda probably meant Nx586. There never was a Nexgen 686 CPU. Another CPU that comes to mind is the Cyrix 486DRu2 & 486DRx2 and also the …

Re: Ebay thread goodbye thread

in Milliways
I echo Malik's, Keropi's & gdjacobs' sentiments. In the end, we have to ask ourselves what Vogons really is about. For me, it's definitely not about sharing all the best deals on eBay and ranting about your unpleasant experiences with a seller. I actually enjoy sharing knowledge and ideas (whether …
