So I drilled into battery terminals and it shows 2.93V... maybe this RTC is just damaged, but otherwise I would need to look for another reason

I haven't heard of a charge controller never being able to work again once it senses 0V (or probably lower than 3.5V per cell). If that's really the case, I would temporarily solder a power supply (like a wall wart) onto the charge controller where it senses voltage so you can work on the battery …

All right, i will solder a socket and experiment with modded chip or replacement. Hope that helps, not sure what to do if not. BTW i didn't see a mod on DS12C887, hope it looks the same on the inside as the other variants, otherwise i will need to guess the battery polarity.

So yes, the n600c is the "ultimate" DOS laptop out there (in terms of fastest CPU and most performant mobile GPU), but I would not say the best. I also have Dell Inspiron 8100 and it has mostly the same specs including ESS Maestro, but the GPU is Radeon 9000 which is superior to everything else …

You could post close-up of integrated sound chip, maybe there is an option to solder a jumper or something like that in order to disable it. But still we won't be sure if that 220h is reserved for sound chip, so hardware hack would be risky.
