Re: Good platform for a simple XP retro machine

If you want a good "daily driver" the newer SFF machines are a great bet too. I'll admit I'm a bit in love with Dell's machines from the last few years. At least the enterprise/office stuff is really good, since they got away from proprietary PSU pinouts and those godawful "transformer" cases with …

Good platform for a simple XP retro machine

If you need a good 2000s "retro" computer: http://computers.woot.com/offers/dell-optiplex-745-minitower-desktop-2?ref=cnt_wp_1_1 BAM. Hands down THE BEST pre-built OEM computer of this vintage you can get your hands on. I almost never advocate buying proprietary systems, but one of these can be very …

Re: Story behind your avatar?

Mine's USP Talon (Fang), the first ship from Tyrian . My avatar is me being ashamed for liking Enter the Matrix. That's the whole story. Hey, the first is actually pretty good! The first film. And if you ask me, the first game as well. BUT most would probably disagree, and I doubt they'd stick up …

Re: What machines did you use in High School?

When I was in High School, there were Dell Optiplex 260 and 270s, desktops for the library lab, and towers for the computer lab (there was only one at first). By the time I graduated a bunch of newer Dell Optiplexes had been installed, and a new lab added. I think they were 520s and 620s, a mix of …

Re: Any of you on Windows 10?

I keep some of my most important files (pictures, mainly) in triplicate. On two hard drives, and a big binder full of DVDs (ugh). Any word on whether you can upgrade a Windows 10 Preview machine to Windows 10 retail? Last I heard they were "hoping" you'd be able to do that. In other news: The Lenovo …

Re: what are your favourite ps/2 mice?

The Logitech SBF96 for me , I got a bunch of them . PS/2 only , 2 buttons , a scrollwheel and optical (even work with amiga adapters without probs). An excellent mouse for retro uses IMHO. http://i58.tinypic.com/34efbxf.jpg My retro mouse of choice is an M-SBF90, in black, but otherwise it looks …

Re: Found something in the basement today...

My mom's first computer was a Dimension. My first laptop was an Inspiron, but a little newer than that version. Dell's Enterprise product has been pretty good for a long time, but their consumer product still doesn't impress me. Consumer grade machines are all pretty lame, come to think of it.

Re: Is there such a thing as a robust mouse wheel?

King_Corduroy wrote: I don't think I've ever worn out a mouse in my life. Wth are you guys doing where you are putting that much strain on your peripherals? 🤣 I bought a new Logitech product, which are apparently dogshit these days. LMB wore out in one month (instead of click it went THUD).
