Could be a dirty/oxidized contact on the jack itself. Try cleaning it on the inside well.

I have a G5, but frankly the original FX5200 that came with it is enough for anything you'd want to do. I did at one point install a Radeon X850 but it wasn't worth it. (which frankly these days amounts mostly to loading Linux on it and use as a server)
