Got a SIS chipset board today, an AOpen S651M. Nice uATX socket 478 board with SIS 651 chipset. It does have a universal AGP slot, but unfortunately doesn't work with 3.3V cards. As soon as you plug one in, a LED near the AGP slots lights up and the board won't even turn on. Getting a few more …

I used so I can operate the retro pc through the capture screen. It's a Logitech and the game is known to have issues with Logitech gear. Anyway I'm just glad I spotted it early enough...

I find these newer cards a bit of a pain to clean properly. I prefer non reference designs which have traditional flower type coolers, they are much easier to work with 😀 But on the 8800 GTX I don't think there is much choice. The 200 series does have nice non reference models however.

Yea you aren't missing anything. What I use is external MIDI devices (Roland and Yamaha), these are a great addition to the AWE64 and then you are set for DOS.

You can easily test the first point. Simply select NONE for sound effects, basically music only, and the hanging notes should disappear. I never had much luck with two machines in the same PC, personally I use an AWE64 Gold together with external MIDI devices. I can live without OPL3 as pretty much …

I use a MX518 USB mouse. It's smoother than PS/2 mice in games 😀 Modern USB joysticks also work great. But that's as far as I have needed peripherals.

Yea many games set the volume when you launch the game. I use an external mixer to mix Sound Blaster, CD audio and Roland, because every game has a different balance.
