512 x 384 was also available before 3dfx. It was definitely a in-between step on the way to 640 x 480. The DOS version of Quake can run this resolution I believe.

Resolution support is independent. Voodoo 2 mins at 512x384, maxes at 1024x768 (with SLI - without it's 800x600) I'm getting a Diamond Monster 3D 4MB.
