I also have no idea 😆 Whenever I have compatibility issues I just try a bunch of combinations of adapters and cards until it works.

I actually have a SL2HE and it comes with the same heatsink as in the picture from cpu-world. It does have an IBM sticker on it, so whatever IBM PC (PC 300GL maybe?) it was in probably had a case fan blowing air directly at it.

Could also be a problem with the adapter itself. If you can find one that uses a completely different IC you may have some luck.

Have you tried with an old CF card of low capacity? Say 256 or 512MB? These usually only support PIO for transfers and is a good way to rule out DMA as the cause of issues, as even if there's no way to enable it on the BIOS, the adapter could take issue with it.

For the record my second PC ever had a Pentium II 266MHz, it was actively cooled and it still had one of those reversed airflow PSUs in a generic ATX case. Even at the time it seemed odd to me, but the thing did work fine for 7 years so, with those types of CPUs it probably wasn't that bad since …

Those PSUs that blow hot air into the cpu were actually designed that way on purpose, and meant to be used with slot 1 systems. However it didn’t take long for manufacturers to realize this was a terrible idea, so you should find another PSU that blows air out of the case. Not sure if reversing the …

I guess in 20 years time we'll know for sure, but it's worth noting that not everyone is in the hobby for the same reasons. Some people just like messing around with computers, doesn't matter if they're old, new, nostalgic or not.

Is it using DMA for data transfers? That usually causes all sorts of problems from my experience.

One way to debug this board without an oscilloscope would be to compare voltages with a similar known good board. Of course this requires a second board 😁

That backplane doesn’t seem to be AT, since the keyboard connector is not on the right place, and as you mentioned, has too many expansion slots.

Well, the nice thing about the 430HX chipset is that it can cache up to 512 MB of RAM. It can, but not all motherboard implementation actually allow it. As far as I know it depends on the type of tag RAM chip used. If it's not the kind that allows the full 512MB then it's still only limited to 64MB …

Fixed! IMG_20220508_125824.jpg The only problem was a shorted horizontal output transistor as well. Also re-soldered what seemed like a cold solder joint on a capacitor near the failed transistor for good measure. I hope the root cause isn't a bad deflection coil.
