At the very least you’ll need a soldering iron and a multimeter. If you’re serious about repairs I would recommend a temperature controlled soldering iron, although it doesn’t have to be a very expensive one. I'd be interested in the slot 1 retention bracket and 1 sloket, if you're in Europe, otherwise I don't think it would be worth it with the extra customs charges.

Your best option would be something like the Lo-tech ISA XT to CF card. I’m running one of those in a 8086 class machine and it works perfectly.

Last time I had those types of I/O errors was because of the card reader going bad. Could also just be the cable, in case there is one, so if you could try another cable or card reader it should help check if this is the problem or not.

As far as I know you can’t use more than 512MB of RAM with Windows 98 unless you manually change some registry settings. Not sure if the hang at boot is what happens in this case or not.
