Re: Gaming on my Intel Atom

Probably they can be used as a very light office linux machine or as said some retrogaming Directx6/7 ones or even older as suggested. Imho a huge problem of the netbooks CPU/GPUs wasn't necessary their speed but the time they existed with a changing much heavier and demanding o.s./driver/game …

Re: Gaming on my Intel Atom

Yes, it has a 3150, the 3150 (https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/gma-3150.c3375) in raw power seems to be similar to a Geforce 256 (https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-256-ddr.c734), so depending on the drivers and other things I think that it could be good for games up to 2001 maybe …

Re: Gaming on my Intel Atom

Some years ago I did a test with a Zotac NM10 ITX Wifi, Atom D525, two miniPCIE ,one standard PCIE 1x, two SATA ports and 2gb DDR2 800 and Win 7 32. With a Radeon HD 5570 it was good for anything until 2007 at 1024x768, the low IPC of the atom CPU is a problem even with a better GPU and the dual- …

Re: Gaming on my Intel Atom

I've also tested the E-350 APU too but at the end it had its problems too. The power/heat was a lot for a mini itx config SoC and the boards I've tested felt like difficult to get a good cooling solution but at least the Radeon into it has a very good linux driver. The dual core CPU instead felt …

Re: Gaming on my Intel Atom

I'm still testing these Atom based configs and tried most of the old and modern o.s. combinations. I usually tested the low end version without HT with a clock of almost 1,9Ghz dual core SSSE3 SoC having the "famous" GMA36x0 (PowerVR SGX 545 based architecture integrated into it) I've tested so many …

Re: Video playback on a 286? - here's how to do it

Interesting. I remember a developer for the Master System console was able to encode videos to run on its original Z80 4Mhz cpu with the limited storage of those consoles. From my old similar test with music, I was impressed to listen some MP3 encoded @ 56Kbits 16Khz on a 386DX@40Mhz with a FPU IIT@ …

Re: Fastest ISA video card for Doom

At the end Quake without tweaks still requires the Pentium and not even the 75Mhz version is that good with it for results like 22 fps or something at default resolution. As often discussed the 486 can't do much there.. it can run it like the 386DX can run Doom.. it can but patience is needed.

Re: What modern activity did you get up to today?

in Milliways
As "modern" tech activity I repaired lately an old 26" LCD TV which I bought in the early 2000 and have a great analog signal logic and still works having both VGA and DVI-D. Then I wanted to buy a good brand modern low end DVD/BlueRay external player to connect to this TV that has only analog sound …

Re: What modern activity did you get up to today?

3DMark2000 doesn't work very well on modern o.s. like many Directx6 based games requiring some compatibility fix to improve frame rate or compatibility. I tested these problems a lot on an old GMA PowerVR GPU. After Windows7 which had already the compatibility tool that should help things didn't …

[Music] Digital keyboards questions

in Milliways
Hello, lately I'm trying to learn after decades to play different movies/music soundtracks on a digital keyboard and after reading about modern cheap lowest end products, trying to find a "good" digital piano keyboard (Casio or Yamaha) and beginning to learn as far as this new idea will last. To " …

Re: Do movies suck these days?

As I was thinking before it really depends on the country the movie was written for and was intended to use stories that would be oriented at first to a specific viewer. Just like music there has been some that didn't have success in a big country and did very well in others. But it can't considered …

Re: Nvidia adaptergate

in Milliways
Probably the problem might have been discussed around the web too much but in these cases I suppose the faster "any" solution comes the better is. Then I wonder the whole point of such power demand for any video card beside the brand, since quite some time and even more in these times. I mean even …

Re: Nvidia adaptergate

What I don't understand beside I don't care about modern video cards, how it's possible that new reference PCB boards weren't immediately redesigned with whatever new/old connector/adapter would be better even if not "modern" like that one. Are those cards still released with the same connector? I …

Re: Do movies suck these days?

About modern movies, well if someone has seen a good part of the ones that are considered best movies of the 1960, 70, 80 and 90 , imho there's a good reason to say modern ones add nothing more compared to those and fails when valued in each specific sector, story, photography, music, direction, …

Re: Toshiba DVD decoder card - manual needed

Great! Any info about the player application, has it the same files of a customized Windows DVD sw player or does it look like a real proprietary app? Its a Toshiba proprietary app. Nothing like Windows DVD player and its functionality. So I imagine the hardware is used as originally supposed to …
