Re: Re: Last Resort

in DOS
I'm a little confused. I no longer own a copy of Win 9x or of DOS and at this point I can't afford them so I'm afraid I'm stuck with what I've got for now, which is Win XP. Admin was probably trying to "catch up" on posts and zipped by that part before he posted...just a guess. When I get a chance, …

Re: X-Com Apocalypse

in DOS
I had 256MB and as soon as I put in the next 256MB I would start getting memory errors. I wasted alot of time before I finally discovered that the problem wasn't the memory I was trying to install, or my motherboard, the problem was Win9x (including 98SE and Me as far as I know). I had completely …

Re: X-Com Apocalypse

Well Nicht, I think you're coaching me both here and on the VDMS boards. :) I _thought_ that was you... As for the amount of memory, Win 9x can't handle more than 384MB of RAM, I have 1GB. As soon as I get over 384MB of RAM under Win9x, I start getting memory errors. !?!? My Win98 is running fine …

Re: X-Com Apocalypse

in DOS
Regrettably I can't do a parrallel install of Win 9x because my system has too much memory (I use it for music editing). Too _much_ memory? You've lost me... From what I have heard however DOS just ignores the RAM that it can't use. I may see what I can do about picking up a copy of DOS, which …

Re: DosBox

Wow, this reminds me of programming games in ASCII (like Megazeux and ZZT). If you can have four colours in an 8x8 block, but with half horizontal resolution, what's the benefit? Sounds like it just renders with 2 colours per 8x8 at 320x200, then downsizes to 160x200, rather than making any changes …

Re: Thanks a bunch

in DOS
As for what version of Windows I am running, I am running WinXP... I think I said that already. :) Sorry. Was cutting and pasting in a hurry (the other post left out the OS). As for running it in Win 95 and 98 compatability modes, that was one of the first things I tried. Just for future reference, …

Re: X-Com Apocalypse

in DOS
I don't know whether X-Com Apocalypse qualifies as a VOGON but it is a DOS based game and I am trying to get it working under WinXP with little success so far. Just responded to this at VDMSound's page under "newbie questions": #1) What OS are you using? #2) Have you tried running the Win95 version …

Re: DosBox

freaked up standard character mode with 8x8 pixel characters, You know, I was thinking that it was 8x8 but somehow it didn't seem right. That makes it all the more amazing that they could do what they did. Arbitrary color limitations like that could drive an artist nuts. Ah well better stick to 16 …

Re: DosBox

Yeah, probably, but you don't have to go around flaunting it! *sniff* ;) Hey, you asked...*shrug* That is, beyond a doubt, the most exuberate thing I've ever heard. Actually, there's plenty more where that came from... Any articles or information on WHY the C64 developers did that? I think it would …

Re: DosBox

WASTELAND... A game that's that old ... on a PC that old ... having an edge on graphics? I mean, call me nuts, ... Ok. You are nuts. but wouldn't the graphics most likely have been EGA or CGA? Correct, WASTELAND is EGA, 16 colors from a palette of 64 (with some poorly chosen colors in there). The …

Re: DosBox

Actually, about the only ones I'll touch from that era are "special interest" items, which usually translates to: good game not available on any other format. "WASTELAND" is in a kind of "grey area". It's one of the "all-time greatest RPG's". Was available on the PC and C64 only. Kind of a toss-up …

Re: NV-1 Emulation

That all depends on the circumstances... NVidia's problem was that the cards cost a hefty chunk of change, then they realized that they had promised well more than they could deliver.

Re: Basilisk II

Sorry, misunderstood (thought you download the OS _as_ HQX files and were trying to "glue" them together). I'm pretty sure you need a tool like "Stuff-It" to unpack the HQX files or let "HFV Explorer" convert them (IOW, no native support).

Re: DosBox

Start with the most ancient you can find and work your way forward. Early 386 games seem to be the upper limit. Most old Sierra titles are a no-go, but the age-old Disney/Westwood titles work quite well (Mickey's 123's/ABC's, etc...). DosBox is (so far) the only way I've seen to run those titles on …

Re: Worst Memory Pig...ever

It's never a concern right up to the point where you're trying to run a game and you just _can't_ do it. I've also come to find out that even with UMBPCI, that I still have to go in and manually edit config.sys for EMS memory regions. Blech... Star Wars: Dark Forces seems to come to mind (needing …
