5 GHz Cedar Mill is not that hard... with some luck you can get that clock on air or water cooling. But even then it is slow, especially in games. For example in my tests stock C2D E6300 (1.86 GHz) is 35% faster than 4.8 GHz P4 651.

In some systems V2 can get very hot... even to a point they lock up during gaming due to overheating. It happened to me in Athlon XP system. Simple cooling fan solved the problem.

What about a Socket 478 Northwood Pentium 4-M? Is there a way for them to work in any desktop motherboard? IIRC the mobiles are locked to the lowest multiplier and there is no way to change it = slow and useless... as AGP 3.3V boards are not very good at overclocking. Asus CT-479 adapter. As far as …

I tried many of these tricks and none of them made the game stable enough to actually play it (always crashed after few minutes). On the other hand the above mentioned win98 rig can run it for hours and not a single crash. 😀

Last time I tried, it didn't work properly on XP. Of course I also have other W98 builds, with V2 SLI, AWE32, etc. Something more period correct. 😀 But this one is mostly just for this one game and for fun - to see how far can win98 go.

There are plenty of LGA 775 pci-e boards that can run win98. With some luck and effort even socket 1366 can run w98. Could you try the V1 in another system? I remember having some compatibility issues with P3B-F and 3dfx HW. Also V1 sometimes doesn't work properly with faster systems. P2 400 should still be on the safe side... but something like Pentium MMX should definitely work without issues.

I have a bunch of V3 with missing at least one of the C101/ C98 / C95 and they still work just fine. But can't hurt to replace the missing parts. Good job. 😀
