Thanks for all the replies. I may need to go with Windows 2000 then. As I'm sure you all know, the TUSL2-C will not support more than 512mb. The only XP disc I have includes service pack 3. If I'm going to have to procure another disc, I might as well try to find a nice copy of Win2k on eBay.

Also, if I remember correctly, some 486 boards don't like 72 pin simms with chips on both sides of the module, but that may have just been for odd sizes like 8MB, 32MB, and 128MB.

Installed a Plextor ultrawide SCSI cd rom in my 486, and finally figured out how to get DOS 6.22 to see the drive. Works great.

Somewhat off-topic, but I'm curious of advantages of choosing Windows 95 over 98. Are there any old games that run on 95 but won't run on 98? I ended up using 98 on my Pentium Pro because it worked much better with USB.

Another possibility is SCSI. Adapter 2940UW/U2W controllers are cheap on eBay and it's fairly easy to find old 4GB SCSI drives, especially if you don't mind an SCA connector. I picked up a couple for $5/ea on eBay not too long ago.

Good news: my video problems are gone. I still have no idea why I had bad luck with pci video cards, but the vesa local bus card I got today works perfectly. I can now reboot my system without a power cycle, and also Windows 3.11 loads up instead of freezing like it used to. Very happy with this …
