Make sure you installed them from the CD - copying them will give it a read only tag.

If you enter the resolutions manually, you get a perfectly sharp image if it matches your desktop resolution. For example, for me it would be 1680x1050 for full screen mode. Another problem is that a lot of people want to play in a window and don't know you can use ALT ENTER.

Try renaming the folders to 8 chars or less. Make the folder name "sabre" instead of "Sabre Team".

They removed all info in the conf files too so people looking to fix the fullscreen crash may have a hard time finding decent explanation.

I tried my copy of Sabre Team and it runs fine in 0.71 with max cycles and auto core. No other settings were changed.

I just tested this myself and I don't have this problem at all in 0.70 CVS. In fact I didn't have this problem in earlier versions either. The only thing that I could notice was that the menu tended to "jump" a bit in animations.
