Re: Native DOS games with framerate display built in

Re: What's planned for DosBox 0.75?

Every time one of these threads pops up the release gets pushed back another year. A new release is nothing to be afraid of. If there aren't any showstopper bugs at the moment, make it a beta and let people download it. Wait a few weeks for complaints, fix regressions, don't fix what never worked …

Re: No CRT Emulation? Why!?

Doesn't look authentic enough though. Looks like very *bad* CRT. A *good* CRT may be very hard to emulate, because the effect is much more subtle. And realistic 60Hz flicker may be impossible to do on LCD.

Re: prevent 4:3 burn-in on 16:9 plasma???

Can you start any animation etc. around the gamescreen? Can the 4:3 gamescreen be moved 1px every 3rd second to the left until it reaches far left, and then go back to the far right? Well, DOSBox is an open-source project, so yes, it's certainly possible to implement such features, if you find a …

Re: Mechwarrior 2 DOS performance

in DOS
But S3 Virge *is* a 3D accelerated card, and from what I read on Wikipedia, there was a special VIRGE version of Mechwarrior 2. Surely it should work faster than software version. I have no idea if it works in DOS or requires Win95.

That's what always made me feel adventurous in hacking a literal digital sound driver for Intel HD Audio under MSS\AIL. [...] would I still run into issues there? Who knows? Perhaps no one tried that yet... It's doable in principle, though I cannot guarantee that you won't run into an unsolvable …

Re: Strange question regarding resource intensive games.

Could a TSR provide SB16 emulation? Yes, with issues. I remember Sound Blaster Live! had a TSR for emulation of older Sound Blasters. In some games it worked, in some it did not. And of course it took conventional memory, which is always precious. And before Live, Gravis Ultrasound also had such a …

Re: Are there any games that are incompatible with newer versions of DOS?

in DOS
DOS 7.1 from Windows 98SE is my DOS of choice. Clearly superior to 6.22 with FAT32 support (which means bigger partitions and more free space on small ones). I didn't have any memory problems, of course some config.sys tweaking is needed. With MEMMAKER you can get a bit more, and with QEMM even more …

Re: What are some DOS games I might have been playing wrong?

in DOS
Quake, for example, aged really badly IMO. What saved it were its gameplay and continued support. I prefer Doom's graphics to Quake. Interesting. I like how the original, low-res non-accelerated Quake looks like. The problem with most source ports is that they try to "improve" the game instead of …

Re: What are some DOS games I might have been playing wrong?

in DOS
"One Unit Whole Blood", the latest Blood version, lacked the 3dfx capabilities of it's predecessors. Which sucked anyway: 3D voxel objects replaced with flat bitmaps, weird filtering instead of bilinear (at least on dgvoodoo, haven't tried the real thing yet), slower than software (again, dgvoodoo) …

Re: What are some DOS games I might have been playing wrong?

in DOS
In some cases, even the Amiga graphics were downgraded for DOS. And the aspect ratio was usually wrong. I don't know what was the usual Amiga resolution/aspect ratio, but many games were ported to 320x200, which is 16:10, but almost all CRT monitors back then were 4:3. The result was a distorted …
