Remove the external battery pack and look if it still happens. Did you reset the Bios by a jumper or different. If by jumper check if the jumper is seated well and that the inner metal piece is connected ok. For the rest I can't imagine what would cause this.. perhaps you slightly hit some chip …

Wouldn't a decent partition tool in a modern system be able to align partitions, even if its a FAT one? Windows 2K/XP/7 doesn't. Mkdosfs claims to do it, but really doesn't. I use KingSpec DOM's in all my old laptops and systems. Not one issue so far and they all run great. They are also widely available at shops or Ebay/Amazon shops.

Cleaning the floppy drive helps a lot with those older systems. Cleaned my own Compaq Contura 430cx floppy drive and brought it back to life. It reads all disks well again. 😊 For the HDD I need more info. Is the HDD not detected anymore and/or does the drive make some of those horrible noises.

Resetting Bios by shorting the cmos might help. Does this board still have a socketed bios chip? Reseating this one can help alot if it has been in storage.
