Re: Hq2x / Hardware OpenGL-HQ scaling

Yeah, triple buffering crashers for me as well. No idea why, or what ATI expects developers to do - the OpenGL API only talks about double buffering, and that's used and works. HunterZ, just get the EXE and see for yourself. My screenshot was 350k (as png!), so I decided not to attach it. Jiri, I'll …

Re: Sketch Quake

Did you know SDL has an aalib output mode? You already have the possiblity to render any game in ASCII. If you set some SVGA text mode with 250x120 chars, it becomes playable 😉

Re: DOSBox's big shortcoming

Whatever has brought you to your conclusions, I think it's flawed. Sure, some companies don't care anymore, but many do. And honestly, where I live, DosBox is way more famous than MAME. Way more. Almost everyone who has been into DOS games once has DosBox at home these days, but only hardcore retro …

Re: Profiling/Benchmarking

The easiest low-tech solution is "turn up cycles until sound starts skipping". Unfortunately, it is rather inaccurate. Unless you compare two different versions side-by-side, it's difficult to get accurate results. It's enough for estimations which may be 10% off, and that's useful since common …

Re: Profiling/Benchmarking

Your one-stop linux profiling source: http://oprofile.sourceforge.net/news/ I've never seen a better profiling solution. Profiles optimized executables, no recompilation neccessary, low overhead, even profiles kernel code (that way I found out my sound driver chews quite some amount of CPU).

Re: ANN: RobyDosBox 0.1 Released

Yeah, but there's a difference. You say users should share their configs. Those configs will most probably not stick to the safe defaults but use whatever their box is capable of doing. That's asking for trouble, IMHO. It's not that difficult to read one file with partial settings and one file with …

Re: ANN: RobyDosBox 0.1 Released

That won't work. A full dosbox.conf is not transferrable. Things like cycles, output, mixer rate, scaler and other options must be tuned differently for each machine. That's why my scripts only store key settings, i.e. those settings that make a crucial difference, like "ems=false" or similar. When …

Re: Choice command

It's real simple: choice /c:abcx Choose one of [ABCX]: /n will give you errorlevel 4 on "x", 3 on "c", 2 on "b" and 1 on "a". The n'th letter (or number) will create errorlevel n.

Re: ANN: RobyDosBox 0.1 Released

I'm using dosbox on linux, and I have written a bunch of scripts that do what you seem to have in mind with your dosbox-archive-format. Perhaps you like some ideas of my system, so let me explain: Games are plain archives. I use 7-zip ( http://www.7-zip.org , free open source) since it has superior …

Re: updating firmware using dosbox

Unfortunately boot disks are still the only option for manufacturers that are too lazy to make Windows-based flashers. A lot of optical drive manufactuerers have Windows-based firmware flashers now... Which is about the worst thing one could do. Being interrupted while flashing can screw up the …

Re: ANN: RobyDosBox 0.1 Released

I like your program very much - it's simple, and there are _not_ many options, that's the best I've ever seen. As you say, sound rate is important. There are several config settings, and to have one single slider or dropdown to choose between 16000/22050/24000/32000/44100/48000 kHz sampling rate ( …

Re: Blank Screen

Did you upgrade dosbox and are using the same config as before? I now recall I once had the same problem, and it was caused by some option which had changed name. No idea what it was, but after creating a completely new config file, it worked again.

Re: updating firmware using dosbox

Don't worry, you'll most likely have exactly no effect. Couldn't imagine dosbox allows that kind of direct access. Windows XP allows you to create an MS-DOS boot disk: just put an empty disk in your floppy drive, right click it, choose "format", and check the box that says "copy system files" (or …
