Re: All Sound Tracker - build

in Marvin \ Sound
Thanks again! Knowing myself, I would be going after the holy grail. Noise doesn’t bother me so much. I’m more concerned about the 1/8 TRS output being scratchy haha. Do you have any more information on specific variants? (Model numbers?) Money is no object in this case as I’ve set a healthy budget …

Re: All Sound Tracker - build

in Marvin \ Sound
AllSound Tracker works fine for me on my expanded AWE64 + FreeDOS + Pentium MMX 233. AFAIK there aren't really any incompatibilities between the AWE32 & 64. The output quality on even the "cheap" AWE64 cards is substantially improved over most of the AWE32 range, which can be pretty noisy. AWE64 …

Re: All Sound Tracker - build

in Marvin \ Sound
Neat! I did the same thing for Impulse Tracker, which can take good advantage of an AWE32/64 and has some extra features (hardware filters, MIDI output) that way. Here are a few pointers - YMMV, of course: - Skip the 486 and go with a Pentium MMX or Pentium 2 with 64MB RAM - AllSound needs a lot of …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Heh, nice to see you finally got your legit copy. Had no idea about that CD-ROM release. I love this game, but basically agree with your assessment - the "right" way to play is to fire it up, pick a map, and have a blast flying around blowing the crap out of everything & enjoying the music and pixel …

@root42 - cool, thanks! I'm also in the "want to learn SMD" camp, although I suspect I need a better iron. I skimmed it already but will give it a proper watch when I have time. :) Tonight's stream on my channel is, um, this: vhsb.jpg It'll probably be far less amusing than I think. We go live in …

Re: Pinball Fantasies no-scroll patch for dosbox 0.65

in DOSBox Patches
@RazaXML: Oh damn, that is seriously awesome. For my "mini" version, it turned out the TN monitor I was using just didn't look good viewing from the "bottom" in portrait mode. It still works as a vertical arcade-cab type setup, but I didn't end up finishing the project. Really cool to see someone …

Re: Descent 3 vs. K6-2+

^^ yeah, I was really surprised by that. The FPS running the demo I made was a bit better than when I played it in-game, maybe because it wasn't handling inputs even though polling the USB card was still hogging resources? Descent 3 supports 3DNow! and was well optimized for the K6 series. I'm not …

Re: Descent 3 vs. K6-2+

Welp. I tried disabling the USB2 card in the device manager. I benchmarked secret2.dem (the famous one used in all the Tom's Hardware tests back in the day) and one I recorded in a map that was seriously chugging. Here are the results: Secret2.dem (Average / Min / Max FPS) With USB2: 38.2 / 14 / 87 …

Re: Descent 3 vs. K6-2+

I do have an NEC USB2 card installed, but I need it for my flight stick, foot pedals, mouse, flash drives (which I use all the time), etc. I don't have a compatible rear panel bracket for the motherboard USB 1.x headers. Disabling joystick + mouse in-game was good for 3-4 FPS, but that's no fun. I'm …

Re: Descent 3 vs. K6-2+

Have I missed some magic setting that I'm supposed to turn on or off, or what? Turns out the answer to this is 'yes' - it's A3D. It still slows down, but I'll take 12 FPS in a heavy battle over 3 FPS in a light one any day. I can even bump it up to 640x480 now. Still curious what you guys are …

Descent 3 vs. K6-2+

Hey all - what kind of performance do you guys get out of this game on this hardware? I'm kinda disappointed with how D3 runs on my heavily-optimized machine. I get 30-45 FPS in empty hallways, but as soon as I'm fighting any group of 2+ enemies, it chugs hard down to 2-3 FPS. Completely unplayable. …

Re: Vogons Video Announcement Thread

I missed out entirely, anything stupid happen? ^^ No worries! Nothing too exciting, a bunch of FLI/FLC animations, some REALLY bad MOD files (and a couple good ones), a VR Studio game I've never seen bfore, a promitional nutrition & fitness guide published by Buick(!), a mech botmatch game written …

I figure this will be of interest to some of you. I'm going through a whole bunch of shovelware CD-ROMs on my stream tonight to see if we can find anything interesting. Fun starts at 7 PM PDT (i.e. in ~45 mins.) Come out & join the spelunk! https://twitch.tv/oldskooljay

Re: Y2K aesthetic software

in Milliways
Oh man, a while ago I ran across this ASUS "AI Booster" overclocking software that looked straight out of a Sonique skin designer's handbook. It's a little late for this kind of look - this screenshot shows it running on an AM2 board from 2006 - but it totally fits, IMHO. It even has a NOS ("Nawz") …

Re: Why can't older 3D games be rendered at higher resolutions?

in Milliways
PC games from 1994-1996 didn't have any 3D hardware to work with; the devs had to write their own rendering code in software. Regardless of what "internal precision" the game does its 3D calculations at, the rasterization step - converting polygons in 3D space to pixels on a 2D screen - is written …
