Any disadvantages to using ME (aside from a bit more space used), or is it all pretty much a wash? I didn't get a sense there was any, but sometimes you have to pound the information into my skull.

Input filter is minimal, but it has what's needed. Can't comment on the size of the transistors or transformers as I don't know the company designators off by heart, but they're likely sized appropriately. Teapos are unsurprising, but they could be a lot worse. They're also using 105deg rated caps …

Definitely stick with SVN builds as 0.74 is quite out of date. I recommend anything which includes the Nuked OPL patch (such as the DOSBox ECE build*) as it significantly improves the accuracy of FM sound emulation. * http://blog.yesterplay80.net/?page_id=515

Hmm, I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. An oscillating magnetic field will effectively de-Gauss the media, reorienting domains in a quasi random manner. Hard disks would suffer additional problems due to low level formatting information stored on the platters that would also be lost.

Unfortunately, all PCI sound cards require certain hardware functionality from the motherboard in order to properly emulate an ISA card in DOS. The exact requirements vary depending on the card and the compatibility method, but any brand new motherboard will have no chance of working in this way. …

Mainline has dropped i386 support, but it might still be available via Ben Hutching's 3.2.x long term support branch. Of course, you might have to do LFS for it to work.

Yes, but also check the combined power handling of the 3.3V and 5V rails. Furthermore, if your caps have degraded, the rails might not be holding in specification or even settling during power on.

You can try using the low profile bracket as a template, then mark your cuts and the center punch locations for drilling. I did this once for a Radeon 7500.

The legs look separated enough to solder individually given fine enough solder and good magnification. Drag soldering is usually best for high density QFP and TSSOP chips. I'd probably solder pins one and five to secure the package, then solder the remaining odd pins, then solder the evens.
