IIRC, VOIP can support 28.8 connections depending on compression used.

For what you're doing, I'd go with the Pi 3 platform so you have the most CPU capability on hand and aren't hamstrung that way.

Well, the ES1868 only has an analog output. It does have a "DSP mode" for running a software modem, but I've never heard of that ever being used for SPDIF. They could be piping the output to the daughtercard from the SAM9407 digitally (and likely are), but they're doing DAC conversion between the …

The overall look is one of modularity, like you could stack different bricks together to add capability. Did this carry over to the internal design, or was it just an aesthetic treatment?
