You mean Windows GM emulation sounds like shit. Use a good midi engine and GM/GS/XG patch set to provide midi for DOSBOX and you should be happy. Having said that, Phil likes his S1 and the comparison with an SC55 and MU80 sounded pretty solid, so I think you've invested in a pretty good product.

There may be second source manufacturers for the part, but they should all be electrically and mechanically compatible. The only option I've found are three pin to-220 packages, 5V 3A output DC.

There may be differences between them in non-perfect conditions, or in terms of longevity (Does it dry out and performs worse? Does it need to be replaced every once in a while?) An op-amp based unity gain mixer would be an inexpensive and relatively easy upgrade. It would definitely give you more ideal behavior in terms of impedances.

You need to reduce the waveform voltage by a factor of five and remove the DC bias. The solution with a voltage divider and transformer is by far the superior option. http://www.hardwarebook.info/S/PDIF_output
