Certainly, an FPGA would be a great way to implement MT-32 in a daughtercard form factor. With MUNT and GM/GS being essentially off the shelf software solutions, MT-32 and SC-55 can be installed in the space of a 5.25" drive while avoiding reinventing the MT-32 in Verilog.

With an eye towards using MUNT in an embedded GM/CM-32L emulator, I want to check performance on some of the cheaper options for ARM processors. Yo. Atom N270 with about 50% cpu usage. I believe a reasonably fast ARM Cortex processor could run it as well.

Floating point (single precision) was what SSE registers were for. The integer elements you mention were just minor modifications of MMX.

DOS (7.1) should be fine. I've run MPXPLAY on FreeDOS using a KT400, AXP 1700+ setup. Native sound support. Dos games will be more problematic, of course, mostly due to PCI only audio.

For Socket A, Palomino or Thoroughbred are period correct as well and much less of a room heater than the old T-Bird cpus.

A V1 or V2 would need a 2D driver which translates all 2D (GDI or whatever) draw calls through Glide. Not sure if such a beast exists. This would be similar to how R5xx and newer ATi cards use the 3D engine for both 3D and 2D draw calls. The differences are 1) VESA support and 2) proper vendor …

It'll show as a modem only as long as the program does no testing. Pretty good chance it's just a bad default setting.
