You could do the same by using FreeBSD instead of Ubuntu. FreeNAS is basically a stripped down BSD. .

A POST card doesn't need drivers. They do their job before Windows even starts. I suspect Windows sees the chip and doesn't know what it is so defaults to asking for a driver. .

3 short beeps on an AMI BIOS says RAM problem. They don't always make good contact when you install them. Is there a way to test a capacitor once unsolded ? To do it correctly you need to check ESR and capacitance and resistance. Resistance both ways. If you only have a resistance meter you can still sort-of check them the old ways but it will not find all possible problems. An analog meter works best …

It's not common but I've come across motherboards without ISA slots that have older (than the mobo) ISA based onboard sound chips that need the -5v to work. They were either MSI or BioStar boards. Others may have done that too. .
